Majority of Hong Kong Households Have Internet Access, Smartphones Dominate Usage in 2024 Survey Findings

On June 12, 2024, the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published Thematic Household Survey Report No. 82, revealing a comprehensive analysis of information technology usage among households in Hong Kong. Notable findings highlight that a staggering 96.7% of households now have Internet access, with smartphones leading the charge as the most common device for online connectivity (99.9%).

The Digital Landscape

As technology becomes intertwined with daily life, the survey underscores a steady trend. In 2024, 95.8% of individuals aged 10 and over reported having used the Internet within the previous year, maintaining a nearly unchanged rate from 2023 (96.0%). Notably, smartphone penetration remained remarkably high at 96.3%, indicating society’s growing reliance on these devices. Furthermore, the adoption of mobile payment systems saw an increase, with 65.6% of individuals aged 15 and over engaging with this technology, up from 64.9% the previous year.

This evolution in technology usage mirrors biblical principles about stewardship and the responsible use of resources—like our time and talents. In the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), Jesus describes how servants were entrusted with their master’s property, demonstrating the importance of wisely utilizing our gifts. As we immerse ourselves in technology, it is essential to use these tools to improve our lives and serve others.

The Industrial Sector’s Resilience

Complementing technological advancements, the C&SD also released provisional statistics on the index of industrial production and producer price index for January to March 2025. Noteworthy changes indicate a 0.7% increase in industrial production across manufacturing industries compared to the previous year, alongside a significant 4.8% rise in the producer price index. In particular, the mechanical and electronic products sector recorded a remarkable 9.7% rise in producer prices, reflecting a considerable shift in market dynamics.

Navigating Challenges with Purpose

In examining these statistics, it becomes evident that progress in technology and industry offers opportunities for growth and fellowship. They serve as reminders of the biblical calling to cultivate and innovate in our endeavors. Proverbs 16:3 advises, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Such wisdom rings true amid the rapid advancements surrounding us.

Moving Forward Together

As we ponder the survey findings and what they mean for our society, let us take a moment to reflect on how we utilize the technologies and resources at our disposal. Are we leveraging them to foster community, enhance our lives, and serve others?

In closing, the encouraging takeaway is this: as we progress in a digitally connected world, let us not forget to nurture our relationships and honor the values that bind us. Every technological tool should empower us to engage positively with one another, embodying the essence of love and service that Jesus taught.

Let this be a call to action—to reflect on how we can use our digital resources to uplift those around us, creating a community that resonates with kindness, generosity, and purpose.
