Protest Erupts in Manipur Following Arrest of Meitei Leader
Imphal, Manipur – Internet services were abruptly suspended, and prohibitory orders were enforced across Manipur’s central valley on Sunday after violent protests erupted overnight. The unrest followed the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) arrest of Asem Kanan Singh, a leader of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol.
The CBI apprehended Singh Saturday evening at Imphal airport, citing his involvement in various criminal activities linked to the violent unrest in Manipur this year. Accompanying him were four other individuals from the group. In retaliation, Arambai Tenggol declared a 10-day "total shutdown," escalating tensions in the region.
In a detailed statement, the CBI revealed that Singh’s arrest is a part of an ongoing investigation directed by the Supreme Court, which has shifted the trial for several violence-related cases from Manipur to Guwahati due to escalating law and order concerns. Notably, Singh was also understood to be involved in the abduction of an Additional Superintendent of Police in February 2024.
As news of his arrest spread, protests quickly turned violent. Demonstrators blocked roads and set tires ablaze across various locations in Imphal, resulting in confrontations with security forces and multiple injuries.
In light of the unrest, authorities suspended internet and mobile data services in Imphal East and West, Kakching, Thoubal, and Bishnupur for five days, fearing misuse of social media to incite further violence. This decision follows similar internet shutdowns from September last year after renewed outbreaks of conflict in the state.
To maintain order, prohibitory orders under section 163 of the law were imposed across valley districts, citing potential breaches of peace. In Bishnupur district, a curfew was enacted, starting at 11 PM on June 7.
A dialogue is anticipated with representatives of one Kuki-Zo group under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with the government, which may address concerns surrounding peace and cooperation. However, tensions remain high as the Meitei groups oppose government negotiations with these entities.
On the ground, despite the heavy deployment of police and military in Imphal, protesters managed to enforce road blockades. Tragically, a 13-year-old boy was injured due to an exploding tear gas shell allegedly fired by security personnel.
An all-party delegation, including 26 MLAs and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, met with Manipur’s Governor, seeking clarity on Singh’s arrest. The Governor confirmed that Singh’s detention relates to the CBI’s investigations, while the status of his associates remains under review.
