Hoopa Valley Tribe Partners with California for High-Speed Internet Push: A Step Toward Digital Equity
HOOPA VALLEY, Calif. — In a significant stride for digital equity, the Hoopa Valley Tribe has joined forces with the state of California to provide high-speed internet access to one of the largest and most remote tribal reservations in the state. Leaders from both sides convened on Tuesday to celebrate this historic partnership, marking the first joint-build agreement between the tribe and the California Department of Technology.
Linnea Jackson, General Manager of the Hoopa Valley Public Utilities District, expressed her gratitude for the collaboration. “It’s an absolute honor to be a partner with the California Department of Technology, California Public Utilities Commission, and Caltrans,” she said. “We look forward to being a great state partner for decades to come.”
This initiative is underpinned by Senate Bill 156, part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s ambitious $6 billion broadband initiative. The goal is clear: connect all Californians to affordable, high-speed internet. California State Chief Information Officer Liana Bailey-Crimmins underscored the necessity of such projects, stating, “One in five Californians don’t have access to affordable high-speed internet,” which became starkly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic.
