As the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) prepares to allocate spectrum for satellite internet services, the competition in this burgeoning market is heating up. Foreign contenders such as Starlink and Amazon have applied for licenses to operate their satellite internet services in India. Unfortunately, these companies have been hampered by delays as they await the completion of the spectrum allocation process. Starlink’s application dates back to October 2022, but it has not yet satisfied the security compliance requirements set forth by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). In this context, DoT has issued reminders to both entities about their compliance obligations, emphasizing the importance of readiness in a timely manner.
