Consolidated Communications Plans Shift from Legacy Voice Services in Northeast States

WASHINGTON, July 10, 2025 – In a significant move, Consolidated Communications has announced its intention to discontinue legacy voice services affecting over 45,000 locations across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. This transformation aims to modernize communication infrastructure and adapt to evolving consumer needs.

The company will transition impacted customers to its voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service, marketed under the Fidium brand. Additionally, Consolidated has noted that major wireless providers offer standalone voice services in these regions, fulfilling federal regulatory requirements for discontinuing legacy services.

A New Era for Communication

Of the total locations targeted for transition, 26,027 are in New Hampshire, 14,848 in Maine, and 4,206 in Vermont. Key counties near state capitals and several northern regions are included in this initiative, aiming to enhance service availability and quality for consumers. Consolidated plans to implement these changes by October 7, 2025, contingent upon receiving necessary regulatory approvals.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plays a crucial role in this transition, ensuring that customers are not left without essential services by mandating a comparable replacement or availability of alternatives.
