Groundbreaking Internet Hub Set to Transform Connectivity in South-Central Kansas
WICHITA, Kan. – May 15, 2025 — In a significant step towards enhancing the state’s digital infrastructure, Connected Nation (CN) and Wichita State University (WSU) officially broke ground today on Kansas’s first carrier-neutral Internet Exchange Point (IXP). This landmark project, supported by local and state dignitaries, promises to improve regional network performance, reduce costs, and enhance access to cloud services.
The new facility will be situated across East 21st Street from WSU’s Eck Stadium and is being developed by Connected Nation Internet Exchange Points, LLC (CNIXP), a collaboration between CN and network interconnection expert Hunter Newby. Funded by a $5 million grant from Kansas Governor Laura Kelly as part of a broader $28.5 million initiative for high-speed internet infrastructure, this project marks a pivotal development in bringing reliable internet access to the region.
"This groundbreaking marks a transformative step forward for Kansas’s digital future," remarked Tom Ferree, Chairman & CEO of CN. He emphasized the project’s potential to provide a more secure, affordable internet, which aligns with biblical principles of stewardship and community support.
When completed, the IXP will serve as a central hub for high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity in the state, allowing local networks to directly peer with content and cloud service providers. This local exchange of internet traffic is expected to yield significant cost savings and improved resilience for businesses and residents alike.
"Implementing access to this IXP will create shorter routes for internet traffic, which can lower costs for everyone," explained Bill Abston, Director of the Kansas Broadband Development Office. This focus on efficiency and community welfare resonates with Proverbs 11:24, which states, “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.” The project embodies a commitment to collective progress through shared resources.
WSU’s involvement includes a 40-year ground lease, demonstrating the university’s dedication to fostering innovation and economic development. President Dr. Richard Muma noted that the IXP would not only benefit students and faculty but would also contribute to the region’s broader economic growth—a testament to the importance of collaboration and mutual support, values echoed in Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
