AI’s Limits: A Cautionary Tale on Scientific Discovery
At the forefront of artificial intelligence discourse, Thomas Wolf, co-founder and chief scientist of Hugging Face, has raised a thought-provoking concern: current AI systems, despite their advancements, are unlikely to deliver the groundbreaking scientific discoveries that some leading laboratories eagerly anticipate.
In an interview with Fortune at the Viva Technology conference in Paris, Wolf articulated a fundamental limitation of large language models (LLMs). While these models possess remarkable capabilities in generating answers, they struggle significantly in formulating the right questions—an essential aspect of scientific inquiry. “In science, asking the question is the hard part, it’s not finding the answer,” Wolf stated. Upon closer examination, he recognized a troubling disparity: “I realized there’s something that sounds very wrong about it, and I don’t believe that.”
