15 Foreign Nationals Sentenced to Prison for Cyber-Terrorism in Nigeria
In a significant legal development, two judges of the Federal High Court in Lagos, Justice Yellin Bogoro and Justice Alexander Owoeye, have convicted and sentenced 15 foreign nationals to one year in prison for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud. This landmark decision comes amid increasing concerns about cybercrime and its impact on national security.
The convicts include 11 Filipinos—Winnie De Jesus, Kayceelynn Remorin, Irish Chna, Darwisa Esmael, Kimberly Nisperos, Savien Cire Renovilla, Jessa Sanchi, Jhena Sarmiento, Rain Torida, Rex Jose Dilag (also known as Madison), and Beverlyin Gumayo (or Veb Sumayo)—as well as two Chinese nationals, Zeng Zerong and Guo Bin, one Malaysian, Tan Soon Kar, and one Indonesian, Fernando Fu Fang.
A Clear Violation of Trust
These individuals were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges related to the possession of fraudulent documents and cybercrimes allegedly committed in December 2024. The EFCC highlighted that the actions of these convicts were designed to undermine Nigeria’s economic and social stability.
Winnie De Jesus, in particular, was accused of procuring Nigerian youths for identity theft, advising them to impersonate foreigners for financial gain. Kayceelynn Remorin similarly collaborated with a corporate entity to exploit Nigerian youths for her deceptive schemes.
The Legal Repercussions
All convicts pleaded guilty, and following their admissions, the prosecution urged the court to impose strict penalties aligned with their plea bargains. As a result, each individual received a one-year prison sentence with the option for a 1 million Naira fine. Furthermore, the judges ordered that all recovered devices be forfeited to the Federal Government, and that the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service prepare for their repatriation after serving their sentences.
