MLB Drug Testing Report Reveals Minimal Positive Results Amidst Suspensions
A recent report from Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Independent Program Administrator sheds light on the state of drug testing in the league, revealing that only two players tested positive for performance-enhancing substances during the 2025 season. Out of approximately 11,700 drug tests, this remarkably low statistic demonstrates the effectiveness of MLB’s rigorous drug prevention measures.
The report, which covers the period from the 2024-2025 off-season to the end of the 2025 postseason, highlights that Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jose Alvarado each received an 80-game suspension for their respective violations: Profar for chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and Alvarado for exogenous testosterone. These findings indicate that while testing remains stringent, there are still instances of players making choices that lead them away from compliance.
Thomas M. Martin, the Independent Program Administrator, submitted the report in accordance with the protocols of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, designed to promote fairness within the sport. Notably, of the tests conducted, 9,400 were urine samples and 2,300 were dried blood spot samples, the latter tested specifically for human growth hormone.
Interestingly, during this reporting period, 57 therapeutic use exemptions were granted, predominantly for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with additional exemptions for hypertension, sleep disorders, and hormone function issues. This raises questions about the balance between fair play and medical necessity—a theme often explored through a moral lens.
The Bible speaks to the importance of integrity in one’s actions. In Proverbs 11:3, it states, "The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them." This verse captures the essence of both personal conduct and the responsibility of athletes to uphold a standard that honors not only the game but themselves as well.
As we reflect on the lessons from this report, it’s important to consider the broader implications of integrity in our own lives. Just as athletes are challenged to stay true to the spirit of the game, we too are called to navigate our choices with honesty and accountability.
In this landscape of competitive sports, let us remind ourselves of the values that undergird fair play, perseverance, and the courage to overcome temptation. This not only fosters a healthier environment in our communities but also mirrors the love and honesty taught by Jesus—embodying the principle that we are our brother’s keeper.
As you consider these insights, take a moment to reflect on your own journey. How can the principles of integrity and accountability guide your actions in daily life?
