New Disc Golf Course Brings Hope and Economic Growth to West Jackson Corridor
JACKSON, Miss. — The West Jackson corridor recently welcomed a vibrant addition to its community: a new disc golf course at Livingston Park. This initiative not only contributes to the area’s economic revitalization but also offers residents a fresh space for fellowship and recreation.
Disc golf is currently one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and before even its official opening, the Livingston Park course has already attracted over 700 players. Mark Sandefur, owner of Between the Pines Disc Golf Supply and the course’s designer, highlighted the sport’s exponential growth, particularly in the wake of COVID-19. "There’s a lot of money in disc golf right now. A lot of businesses were struggling, but disc golf was booming because COVID pushed everyone outside and into the parks. We saw competitive memberships triple during that time," Sandefur noted.
The newly constructed 18-hole course is equipped to host significant tournaments and competitions, promising to draw thousands to Jackson. Rickey Thigpen, CEO of Visit Jackson, emphasized the economic benefits these events would bring to the capital city. "We’re talking about 20 to 30 teams that come to Jackson, spending two nights in a hotel and eating three meals a day at local restaurants — that’s a significant economic impact."
Beyond boosting tourism, the course serves as an essential gathering place for local residents. Community advocate Sheka Epps shared her enthusiasm for the project, explaining her commitment to improving her neighborhood. “I’m very into the community now. I decided I wouldn’t talk negatively; instead, I’d see how I could make things better,” Epps said. Her dedication has transformed Livingston Park from what was once an overgrown space into a lively hub for community engagement.
Epps and other community members are motivated by a shared desire to breathe new life into the West Capitol corridor. "We all wanted life to come back into this community and make the West Capitol corridor beautiful," she reflected. Plans are already in motion for the first tournament in March, while efforts progress to bring an amphitheater to the park.
