Dallas Wings Welcome Chris Koclanes as New Head Coach Amidst New Beginnings

In a significant turn for the Dallas Wings, Chris Koclanes has been appointed as the team’s new head coach, alongside Curt Miller, the newly appointed general manager. Their shared history as coaching colleagues in Connecticut with the Sun, where they collaborated from 2016 to 2022, sets a promising foundation for their new venture together.

Koclanes expressed gratitude for the support from Miller as he steps into this pivotal first-time head coaching role. "To have him there as a thought partner is fantastic," Koclanes said, emphasizing the importance of mentorship in personal and professional growth—a principle echoed in many faith traditions, which value the guidance of experienced leaders. Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another,” reminding us of the mutual growth that comes from collaboration and mentorship.

The duo boasts a commendable track record, having led the Sun to two WNBA Finals in 2019 and 2022. Miller underscored the qualities that led to Koclanes’ selection, highlighting the need for a coach who could foster a culture of high integrity and effective communication—qualities that also resonate deeply with Christian values of honesty and community.

Despite their close relationship, Miller noted that this bond almost hindered Koclanes’ candidacy during the selection process. This speaks to the delicate balance of personal connections in professional environments and the need for objective evaluation, which can often require courage and discernment. Miller recounted a conversation with team president Greg Bibb that refocused the search on talent rather than proximity: “Why are you afraid to hire him? If he’s the best person let’s go.”

With significant experience under his belt, Koclanes is now among the league’s top coaches, having consistently led strong defensive teams during his tenure in Connecticut. Miller stated his commitment to assemble a roster that complements Koclanes’ coaching style and offers the requisite tools to succeed. “I’d love to help with the ingredients so he can cook with these players,” Miller remarked, highlighting the value of teamwork—a principle that is similarly reflected in Christian teachings about the body of Christ functioning together for a common purpose (1 Corinthians 12:12-14).

As the Wings prepare for the upcoming WNBA draft, they are in a position to make strategic choices that could reshape their trajectory after a challenging season. With Miller pointing out the development of a new practice facility and the upcoming renovations for the arena, the organizational commitment to growth is clear. It is indeed an exciting time for the franchise as they set their sights on future victories.

In light of these changes, one is reminded of the great potential for transformation that comes with new leadership and fresh starts. As we witness Koclanes embark on his coaching journey, it invites us to contemplate how we can support one another in our respective callings, offering encouragement much like the apostles did in the early church.

As it is written in Philippians 1:3-6, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” May we all embrace the good work being done around us and in us, and seek opportunities to uplift those embarking on new journeys.

As you reflect on the Wings’ exciting new chapter, consider how you can be an encourager in your own community—supporting those taking bold steps in faith and leadership.
