Fundraising Struggles Reflect Broader Challenges for Colorado’s Wolf Reintroduction Repeal Effort
In an unexpected turn, a key group opposing Colorado’s wolf reintroduction program for the 2026 ballot has fallen significantly short of its fundraising targets. The Advocates for Smart Wolf Policy aimed to raise $200,000 by March 31 but managed only $29,000, raising questions about the viability of their campaign.
Initially, in early February, the group sent an urgent request for $100,000, linked to the impending review of their ballot measure by the state’s Title Board. After extending their deadline and increasing their goal, they were left with a sobering reminder of the uphill battle they face.
As they look toward gathering necessary signatures by the August 27 deadline, challenges abound. The first report disclosed that of the $11,311 spent, more than $10,000 went to Patrick Davis Consulting, run by the group’s leader, Patrick Davis. Moreover, financial support came chiefly from notable individuals, with former CU President Bruce Benson contributing significant sums, illustrating the group’s reliance on a few high-profile backers rather than broad grassroots support.
Amidst their struggles, a coalition composed of Western Slope county commissioners, ranchers, and conservationists has pressed for a halt to the initiatives, concerned that they do not represent the interests of all stakeholders. This diverse mix of voices reminds us of the biblical principle of community and the importance of coming together as a body—much like the community Paul writes about in 1 Corinthians 12, where all parts of the body, each with their functions, contribute to the health of the whole.
The concerns voiced in a recent letter highlight the potential consequences should these initiatives proceed without adequate collaboration and unity: “significant,” as described by the coalition, social and political ramifications may arise, echoing Jesus’ teaching to build foundations on rock rather than sand (Matthew 7:24-27). Without common ground, efforts can lead to more division than solution.
Despite the internal struggles, Davis expressed gratitude for “the hundreds of grassroots donors” supporting the initiative, a sentiment that reflects a hopeful attitude in challenging times. The disparity between their fundraising efforts and the criticism they face calls for introspection—a reminder that pursuing a goal without comprehensive support can often lead to an unfulfilling outcome.
As we observe this ongoing situation, a powerful takeaway emerges: genuine progress in community matters often requires an inclusive dialogue, wisdom, and understanding, inviting different perspectives into the fold. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed."
This situation encourages us to reflect on the value of unity and collaboration in our own communities. Whether over environmental policies or everyday decisions, let us seek to foster understanding and cooperation, aligning our actions with the principle of love and respect for one another. In these collective efforts, we find strength, wisdom, and perhaps even the mercy we strive for in our daily lives.
