Types of Rivers: Single-Threaded vs. Multi-Threaded

Rivers generally fall into two categories: single-threaded and multi-threaded. Most of the world’s largest rivers are multi-threaded. Interestingly, the Mississippi River, one of the most studied, remains single-threaded. This study provides a nuanced view, indicating that the difference in river channels is less about the volume of water and more about the shaping of riverbanks.

A Call for Restoration

Historically, many rivers have been confined to narrow channels as cities and agricultural developments expanded, preventing them from flooding. This, however, disrupts ecosystems and raises riverbeds, making floods more severe. Echoing the sentiment that healthy rivers reflect a healthy environment, planners are now encouraged to reconnect waterways with their floodplains to aid in ecological recovery.

One particularly striking observation is that single-threaded rivers require about ten times more space and time to restore than multi-threaded rivers. This crucial finding could significantly impact the feasibility and cost of restoration projects.
