New Exclusion Zone Established Along Anglesey Coastline to Protect Rare Wildlife
In a significant move to safeguard vulnerable wildlife, the RSPB has implemented a new exclusion zone on a protected stretch of the Anglesey coast. This measure comes in response to escalating damage to the area’s delicate ecosystems, particularly around the Range near South Stack lighthouse—home to a variety of rare bird species and plant life.
With the rise in outdoor activities such as coasteering—a sport involving climbing and swimming along rocky coastlines—concerns have surged regarding the impact these pursuits pose to local wildlife, especially during the crucial bird breeding season. The new restrictions, applicable to a 1.8 mile (2.9 km) exclusion zone, allow public access to the coastal path but impose temporary limitations on activities that might disturb nesting birds, including the Schedule One protected chough.
Alun Prichard, director of RSPB Cymru, emphasized the ecological importance of the Range, stating, “It’s one of the most special and important places for habitats and species, in many cases internationally.” To put this into perspective, the biblical principle of stewardship resonates in this context. Gareth Davies from Arete Outdoor Centre articulated a concern that the restrictions might simply shift problems to different areas of the coast, stressing that ongoing dialogue is essential. As the exclusion zone remains in effect until September 15, officials have committed to reviewing its impact, considering further engagement with local organizations involved in outdoor activities. The RSPB, NRW, and Anglesey Council collectively reaffirm that the goal of the exclusion zone is not to bar access but to protect one of the area’s ecological treasures. Anglesey Council’s Andy Godber noted, “We recognize the need for and challenges of balancing wildlife protection and outdoor leisure activities.”
