550-Pound Bear Evicted from Altadena Home: A Test of Patience and Community Cooperation

In a surprising twist, a 550-pound black bear that took up residence under a California man’s home has finally vacated after more than a month of failed attempts by state officials to remove him. A unique strategy involving paintballs filled with vegetable oil ultimately coaxed the bear out, bringing relief to homeowner Ken Johnson and a sense of accomplishment to wildlife specialists.

Johnson had been facing an increasingly dire situation since late November, when the bear began to undermine the structural integrity of his home. "Right after surviving the Eaton fire, I lost my job, and shortly after that the bear began tearing into the structure of my home," Johnson explained on his GoFundMe page. The bear’s antics caused extensive damage, forcing him to shut off utilities due to concerns of gas leaks and structural issues.

After multiple failures—including bait and traps that caught the wrong bear—the California Department of Fish and Wildlife turned to the BEAR League, an organization specializing in humane bear removal. “Scott, one of our most experienced responders, crawled beneath the home—fully aware the bear was still there—to get behind him and encourage him to exit,” the organization shared. Within 20 minutes of employing this approach, the bear was successfully persuaded to leave.

As the bear scurried away, it symbolized more than just the end of a home invasion; it highlighted the power of community collaboration in addressing challenges. In this modern tale, one might recall Proverbs 17:17: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." Johnson reached out in his adversity, and the swift response from the BEAR League exemplifies the importance of seeking help and supporting one another.

The successful eviction also serves as a reminder of the need to share our spaces with care. BEAR League emphasized that homeowners should properly secure crawl spaces to prevent wildlife intrusions, an aspect of stewardship that resonates with biblical teachings. By being diligent in safeguarding our homes, we foster a safer coexistence with nature.

As we reflect on this incident, we find an encouraging takeaway: challenges often bring unforeseen opportunities for cooperation and mutual support. Just as Johnson found assistance when he reached out, we too are invited to look for community in our own struggles, embracing collective efforts in addressing life’s challenges.

In times when difficulties seem overwhelming, remember the promise of Proverbs 27:17: "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Let us also be mindful to offer our support to those in need around us, fostering an environment where helping hands are but a call away.
