Seal Pup Rescued as Pacific Northwest Pupping Season Begins: A Call for Compassion
DES MOINES, Wash. — A solitary harbor seal pup, found starving on a beach in Tokeland, is receiving care and rehabilitation at a facility in Des Moines, marking the onset of the pupping season in the Pacific Northwest. The abandonment of seal pups often occurs due to well-meaning human interactions that inadvertently frighten mothers away. Casey Mclean, executive director of Sealife Response, Rehabilitation and Research (SR3), highlighted that these marine mammals are naturally cautious. “People or pets getting too close create a risk for these animals,” she emphasized. By ensuring the pup retains her instincts, staff members elevate the pup’s chance for survival in her natural habitat.
During the pupping season, SR3 typically rescues and rehabilitates around 60 marine mammals, primarily harbor seals. The nonprofit organization underscores the need for public awareness and responsibility. Mclean urges community members to maintain distance from marine life, especially during this vulnerable time, and to report any potentially abandoned or injured animals.
