Oregon’s Porcupine Project: A Call for Community Involvement in Conservation
PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ)—In an inspiring initiative reminiscent of stewardship principles highlighted in Scripture, Oregon Fish and Wildlife’s Ochoco Office is urging residents to report any porcupine sightings as they launch a two-year study on this elusive mammal. With their population mysteriously dwindling, the project seeks to understand the habits and ecosystem of these fascinating creatures.
Porcupines, with their unique quilled coats, are currently unprotected in Oregon, leaving researchers like Mikayla Bivona, acting assistant wildlife biologist at the ODFW, with limited data on their life history. "They’re hard to find, but we are determined to learn more," Bivona stated, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in this effort.
The call to action is clear. Citizens who encounter porcupines are encouraged to call the Ochoco Office at 541-591-1629 or fill out a reporting form. By tracking these creatures using GPS technology, biologists will conduct vital habitat studies and diet analyses, aiming to unravel the mysteries surrounding their decline.
