Devastating Floods Hit Central and Southeastern Mexico, Leaving 22 Dead
MEXICO CITY (AP) — In a tragic turn, relentless heavy rains have led to severe flooding in central and southeastern Mexico, resulting in landslides and widespread devastation. As of Friday, local authorities reported at least 22 lives lost, with the hardest-hit region being the central state of Hidalgo, where 16 deaths have been confirmed.
As the rain-swollen rivers breached their banks, the impact on infrastructure has been catastrophic. In Hidalgo alone, over 1,000 homes, 59 hospitals and clinics, and 308 schools have sustained damage, prompting state Interior Secretary Guillermo Olivares Reyna to declare a disaster situation. Compounding the crisis, 17 out of 84 municipalities are currently without electricity, leaving many residents vulnerable.
Neighboring Puebla state has also seen significant loss, with officials confirming three fatalities and 13 individuals reported missing. Governor Alejandro Armenta has turned to the federal government for assistance in rescuing 15 stranded individuals, including several children, who found themselves trapped atop rooftops amid rising waters. He estimated that approximately 80,000 people have been directly affected by the torrential rains, which have also caused a gas pipeline rupture due to landslides.
Further along the Gulf coast, Veracruz state reported two fatalities, including a police officer, as the city of Poza Rica experienced severe river flooding. As a precaution, local authorities cut electricity to mitigate additional hazards.
In a parallel account of tragedy, earlier reports confirmed the death of a child in Queretaro, caught in a devastating landslide.
