Elk Rescued from Cliff by Ice Climbers and Wildlife Officials in Colorado: A Testament to Compassion
LAKE CITY, Colo. (AP) — In a remarkable demonstration of teamwork and compassion, wildlife officials and several climbers came together to rescue a bull elk entangled in a rope at a popular ice climbing area in southwestern Colorado. On Friday morning, a group of ice climbers in Lake City encountered the distressed elk stranded on a cliff after it became caught in a rope the previous night. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials responded promptly, with a biologist darting the approximately 700-pound animal with a tranquilizer, covering its eyes with a ski mask to minimize its distress during the rescue.
While the initial effort focused on removing the rope from the elk’s antlers, the challenge of safely lowering the animal from the vertical cliff remained. Fortunately, the same climbers who reported the elk jumped into action, working alongside wildlife officers to fashion a rescue plan using two ropes—one supporting the elk’s chest and the other securing its antlers. After a coordinated effort, the team successfully lowered the elk to more stable ground. Following this tense and delicate procedure, the effects of the tranquilizer were reversed, allowing the elk to regain its senses and escape down the snowy canyon after approximately 12 minutes.
John Livingston, a spokesman for CPW, described the elk’s condition, noting that it showed signs of fatigue but only minor scrapes from its ordeal. He reflected on the time and care taken to ensure the animal’s safety: “It took over two hours to free the hapless animal, demonstrating our commitment to wildlife.”
