Boil Water Order Lifted for Casco Bay Islands: A Community Recovers

PORTLAND, Maine — In a swift response to a water main break, the Portland Water District has lifted a boil water order that affected five islands in Casco Bay. The order, which was put in place on Wednesday afternoon, was rescinded as of 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning, bringing much-needed relief to local residents.

The incident began on Wednesday when residents reported low water pressure around 6:15 a.m. on Great Diamond Island, Little Diamond Island, Peaks Island, and Cushing Island. Bob Hannigan, the owner of Hannigan’s Island Market on Peaks Island, witnessed the immediate rush of concerned locals. “We opened the door at 8 o’clock, and it was like a run, especially for the plain Poland Springs waters. The two-gallon sizes, the one-gallon size, and the one-liter bottles — they’re all gone,” he shared with Maine’s Total Coverage reporter Cameron Lobley.

The Portland Water District quickly mobilized crews to identify the source of the problem, discovering the water main break on Rockledge Avenue on Little Diamond Island by mid-morning on the same day. In a commendable effort, samples from the water supply were collected, and after thorough testing, officials announced on Thursday that the water was safe for consumption without boiling.

This situation serves as a reminder of the biblical principle of community support and service. In Galatians 6:2, it is written, "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." The quick actions of local officials and residents highlight how compassion and readiness can harmonize a community in times of crisis. As people relied on one another for safe drinking water, it is a reflection of the caring spirit emphasized in many biblical teachings.

For residents who may still have questions, the Portland Water District can be reached at 207-761-8310, while the State of Maine Drinking Water Program can provide further assistance at 207-287-2070.

As we reflect on this incident, let it be a gentle reminder of the importance of unity and support in our communities. Just as the storm passes and reveals clear skies, challenging times can also bring about opportunities for strengthening bonds. Let us encourage one another and maintain a spirit of readiness and care as we navigate through life’s many trials.

In uncertain times, may we find reassurance in the community around us and in the teachings that inspire us to support one another wholeheartedly.
