Alternative Healer Sentenced to 10 Years for Manslaughter Linked to ‘Slap Therapy’ Workshops in London
LONDON (WKRC) – In a case that has sparked significant debate about alternative medicine practices, Hongchi Xiao, a 61-year-old alternative healer, was sentenced to ten years in prison for manslaughter by gross negligence following the tragic deaths of two individuals linked to his controversial workshops. Known for promoting a technique he calls "slap therapy," which claims to expel "poisonous waste" from the body, Xiao’s methods have raised serious questions about safety and ethical responsibility.
In 2016, Danielle Carr-Gomm, a 71-year-old diabetic, attended one of Xiao’s workshops, where she was encouraged to stop taking her insulin. Tragically, her health deteriorated over the course of the event, leading to immense suffering and ultimately her untimely death. Prosecutors described her condition as dire by the third day, stating she was "vomiting, tired and weak" and eventually unable to respond while in severe pain.
This was not the first fatal incident associated with Xiao. In 2015, a six-year-old boy in Australia died after his parents, following Xiao’s guidance, ceased administering insulin. In a previous trial in Sydney, Xiao was convicted of manslaughter for his role in that child’s death, highlighting a pattern of negligence that has led to heartbreaking consequences.
As Xiao was sentenced, Justice Bright expressed grave concerns about his continued belief in slap therapy. He criticized Xiao for failing to seek medical care for Carr-Gomm when it was clear she was in danger. "There is a risk you will actively or tacitly encourage followers to reduce their medication," the judge stated, predicting that history may repeat itself if Xiao is allowed to continue his practice.
Interestingly, Xiao has labeled himself a political prisoner, asserting that the truths of slap therapy are beyond the comprehension of mainstream medical experts and media outlets. This assertion raises an essential question about the importance of discernment and wisdom, values emphasized in many teachings.
Reflecting on this tragic situation, it prompts consideration of the biblical principle found in Proverbs 4:7: "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding." This verse emphasizes the paramount importance of wisdom and discernment, particularly in matters of health and well-being.
In a world filled with various approaches to healing, it is crucial for individuals to seek wisdom, turning to reliable sources of information and thoroughly evaluating the advice given, especially when it concerns life-sustaining treatments.
As we process the ramifications of this case, let us reflect on the broader spiritual lesson of caring for one another and prioritizing the well-being of ourselves and those around us. Encouraging compassion and accountability in every aspect of our lives, we can strive to ensure that the principles of love and Health—integral to the teachings of Jesus—guide our decisions and actions.
