Rising Healthcare Costs: A Study Unveils the Impact of Hospital Acquisitions
A recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research highlights a concerning trend in U.S. healthcare: as hospitals acquire private physician practices, costs for childbirth and other services have risen sharply. Since the early 2000s, the percentage of physicians employed by hospitals has nearly doubled. Currently, around 47% of U.S. doctors work for hospitals, contrasting sharply with only 42% in private practices. According to the study, after a hospital acquires an OB-GYN practice, the prices for labor and delivery surge by an average of $475, translating to a 3.3% increase. Matthew Grennan, one of the study’s authors, emphasized that these price hikes stem from reduced competition.
