RIT Student Champions Deaf Health Advocacy Through Innovative Research

In a groundbreaking initiative showcasing the intersection of education and health advocacy, Emma Kane, a third-year public policy major from Brighton, N.Y., has emerged as a pioneering force at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Her year-long research at the Deaf Health Laboratory, part of the newly established Deaf Health Care and Biomedical Sciences Hub (Deaf Hub), reflects a steadfast commitment to improving health resources for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

Since its inception in 2022, the Deaf Hub has focused on increasing representation of Deaf individuals in healthcare and biomedical sciences. By providing essential pathways to healthcare careers, networking opportunities for Deaf scientists, and conducting research that directly impacts the Deaf community, the Hub is making significant strides in healthcare accessibility.

Kane’s journey with the Hub began in the Summer Healthcare Academic Research Program (SHARP), where she found her passion for public health research and recognized the challenges faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing young adults in accessing sexual health resources. “I’m working to find barriers in sex education,” Kane explained. “The goal is to improve access to sexual health resources by gamification and create policy solutions.” Her focus on reproductive health experiences for individuals within the Deaf community further highlights her dedication to inclusive healthcare.

While Kane’s research is vital, her ambitions extend beyond the realm of medicine. “I have a huge passion for changing Deaf education through policy work,” she shared, envisioning a future where education for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children is not just a possibility but a priority. This vision aligns with the biblical principle of advocating for justice and equity. Proverbs 31:8 reminds us, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed." Kane embodies this ethos, striving to provide policy solutions that enhance educational access—a vital public health issue.

Kane also emphasizes the holistic learning environment at RIT, where she balances her academic pursuits with active involvement in student organizations, such as Alpha Sigma Alpha and the College Panhellenic Council. Her engagement is a testimony to the importance of community—an essential facet of both academic and spiritual growth. “I enjoy trying new coffee shops around Rochester and across the country as well!” she remarked, highlighting the joy found in connections and shared experiences.

Her choice to pursue public policy stems from a desire to create impactful solutions that address systemic issues. “It’s about creating the big picture,” she articulated. Similar to the way Jesus taught to think beyond societal norms, Kane’s approach encourages innovation and advocacy for marginalized communities.

As Kane prepares for a future that includes pursuing an MBA and a potential Ph.D. in education policy, her journey serves as a compelling reminder of how one individual can drive change.
