In a neighborhood where culinary traditions run deep, the Mendelsohn family has taken another bold step forward in the world of kosher dining, inaugurating their upscale dairy restaurant, Cucina Modern Kitchen, right next door to their legendary pizzeria on 18th Avenue in Boro Park. This family-operated venture harkens back to their roots while embracing innovation in the kitchen, offering a delightful mix of Mediterranean and Italian flavors crafted from scratch.
The Mendelsohn family has long been synonymous with quality kosher cuisine, having opened Boro Park’s first kosher pizza shop 56 years ago. Owner Heshy Mendelsohn, along with Chef Mendy Uzan, aims to elevate the dining experience, introducing gourmet dishes such as sourdough pizzas and a unique fish version of Lebanese Arayes. As highlighted by Heshy, “We are continuing the tradition by offering an extensive menu, each dish bursting with color and delicious flavor.”
The family’s journey began in 1969 when Rabbi Mayer Mendelsohn and his wife Malka fled the shadows of the Second World War in Poland to establish a small pizza shop. Their commitment to homemade recipes soon attracted patrons from near and far, setting a standard for kosher dining that resonates today.
Reflecting on their culinary philosophy, Heshy cites his grandmother’s influence. “All her recipes were homemade from scratch,” he says, echoing a biblical principle that speaks to the importance of tradition and family. In Proverbs 22:6, it is written, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” The Mendelsohns embody this wisdom through their commitment to quality and family recipes, fostering a legacy that honors their heritage.
Cucina Modern Kitchen’s menu features an array of inviting options: from beet profiteroles filled with creamy ricotta to four-cheese cigars, and various pasta selections such as penne ala vodka and gnocchi. The ambiance of warm wood accents and an inviting bar completes the experience, all set to welcome guests to savor authentic Mediterranean flavors.
“The warm and upscale ambiance adds to the experience,” says Heshy. “We invite you to experience Cucina Modern Kitchen – our kitchen is open for you to enjoy our simple, uncomplicated, and delicious Mediterranean flavors.” Each dish, crafted with care, symbolizes a journey through both family history and culinary artistry.
As patrons prepare to embark on a culinary journey at the new restaurant, they are not just visiting to satisfy their hunger but also to be a part of a living tradition rooted in community and dedication. Just as Jesus emphasized the importance of sharing meals with others in fellowship, dining at Cucina Modern Kitchen serves as a reminder of the joy that comes from gathering around a table, sharing stories, and creating lasting memories.
As you consider your next dining experience, may the spirit of community and tradition enhance not just your meal but also your journey. Let us take a moment to reflect on how our choices, whether in the kitchen or elsewhere, can build up our connections with others, fostering a greater sense of belonging.
