Crown Heights Salon Expands into Women’s Fitness: A Story of Reinvention and Empowerment
By Libby Herz
For over twenty-five years, La Femme salon in Crown Heights has been a go-to destination for women seeking beauty treatments. Under the ownership of Sary Pinson, the salon is now embarking on an exciting new chapter by introducing a dedicated fitness studio aimed at empowering women in the community.
A Turning Point in the Beauty Business
Before the pandemic, La Femme was thriving, offering a range of services from manicures to massages, supporting a loyal customer base. However, COVID-19 transformed the landscape, leading to significant changes—and challenges. “Covid changed the entire beauty scene,” says Pinson. The loss of long-time technicians left her at a crossroads. Faced with the decision to either sell or evolve, Sary took a different path: she focused inward, prioritizing her health.
A close friend invited her to a gym, where Sary, initially resistant to fitness, found herself slowly drawn into the world of exercise. “I never really worked out in my life,” she admits. Yet, motivated by the community vibe and newfound energy, she began exercising regularly, leading to significant health improvements. What started as a quest for mobility blossomed into a passion for fitness.
From Salon to Fitness Studio
As she adapted her business model, the concept for the fitness studio emerged. Partnering with Yana, a gym instructor and friend, Sary transformed the unused back rooms of the salon into a modern, inviting women’s workout space. The studio features bright colors, calming aesthetics, and various workout options designed for women of all ages and fitness levels.
“Classes will focus on health education, proper nutrition, and building good habits,” Sary explains. The aim is to create a supportive environment where women feel comfortable investing in their well-being. The studio will offer a schedule accommodating various lifestyles: early morning classes for working women, sessions for mothers while their children are in playgroups, and evening options for those with busy days.
Community and Reinvention: A Biblical Perspective
In the spirit of community—a value deeply rooted in Christian teachings—Sary’s venture reflects the biblical principle that we are stronger together. Just as Jesus taught the importance of loving and serving one another, this new fitness initiative offers women an opportunity to uplift each other on their wellness journeys.
“Encourage one another and build each other up,” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) serves as a guiding verse here. The fitness studio not only promotes physical health but also fosters a strong network of support, empowering women to pursue mental and emotional well-being.
An Invitation to Reflect
As Sary embraces the world of social media to connect with her community—a world she initially found daunting—she embodies the spirit of resilience and adaptability. “I had to reinvent myself and find my passion again,” she explains, demonstrating that change can lead to renewal and growth.
In this new era where many women struggle to prioritize self-care, Sary’s message is clear: it is possible to reinvent oneself at any age and stage. Her story serves as a reminder that taking the first step—whether in fitness or in life—can lead to unexpected transformations.
Takeaway: As you reflect on Sary’s journey, consider how you might embrace change in your own life. Whether it’s through physical fitness, developing new skills, or strengthening relationships, remember that reinvention is always within your reach. Together, let’s encourage one another on the path to holistic well-being.
