Kaiser Permanente to End Enrollment for Community Health Care Program, Urging Action for Uninsured Californians

In a move that may resonate with the pressing healthcare challenges faced by many, Kaiser Permanente announced it will close the application process for its Community Health Care Program on January 31. This program was designed specifically to provide comprehensive, affordable healthcare to low-income adults and children in California sitting just above the Medi-Cal threshold.
Since its launch in November, the program has aimed to fill a crucial gap—serving those who earn too much for government assistance but not enough to afford private insurance. In an era where healthcare access remains a formidable issue, the closing of these applications highlights the ongoing struggle many Californians face in securing adequate health coverage.
“The Community Health Care Program helps address this gap, providing Kaiser Permanente’s high-quality care and coverage to eligible Californians in our service areas,” said Yvette Radford, vice president of external and community affairs at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. This program does not discriminate based on immigration status, emphasizing a commitment to inclusivity and care for all.
Echoes of biblical teachings on caring for the marginalized and vulnerable resonate in this context. In Matthew 25:40, it is stated, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." This program represents a tangible effort to care for those who are often overlooked, aligning with the heart of service that Jesus exemplified throughout His ministry.
With many Californians still uninsured even with Medi-Cal’s expansion in 2024, the urgency is palpable. Applicants must meet specific criteria: they must not be eligible for other health coverage, their income must not exceed three times the federal poverty level—$45,180 for individuals or up to $93,600 for a family of four—and they must reside in a Kaiser service area.
Most notably, this program allows participants to receive care without monthly premiums, easing the burden of out-of-pocket expenses that often accompany healthcare access. This aligns with the Christian principle of bearing one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2) and shines a light on the importance of community support in times of need.
For those seeking assistance, organizations like Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Stockton and El Concilio are available in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties to help navigate the application process. Their presence underscores the collaborative effort to bring quality healthcare to those in need.
As the deadline approaches, we encourage all eligible individuals to take action—this opportunity may be a bridge to better health and well-being. In doing so, it serves as a reminder that we are called to lift one another up as a community. Reflecting on this situation, let us consider how we can collectively respond to the call to care for those who are vulnerable, embodying the spirit of compassion and service that lies at the heart of our shared humanity.
