Local Podcasters Aim to Shift Mental Health Conversations in Iowa: Supporting Those in Need

NORWALK, Iowa — In a time when mental health challenges are at the forefront of societal concern, local podcasters Tyler French and his friends are using their platform, The Weekly Weebs Podcast, to foster important discussions within their community. Anchoring their content primarily in the world of anime, video games, and cartoons, the group emphasizes that their mission extends far beyond just entertainment – they strive to initiate conversations about mental health, particularly for those who may feel marginalized.

"Our podcast is rooted in fun discussions—we cover all sorts of topics," French explained. "But we believe that by establishing this common ground, we can connect with our listeners on deeper issues, such as mental health." The underlying motivation for their outreach is to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly the societal pressures that discourage open discussions about feelings, often associated with toxic masculinity.

In line with the teachings of compassion and understanding found in the Bible, the group’s efforts underscore the importance of caring for our fellow human beings. Jesus spoke about loving your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31), a principle that resonates deeply with their aim to address feelings of isolation among veterans and members of LGBTQ communities—two groups that can be particularly susceptible to bullying and negative self-image.

Taking their mission beyond the digital realm, French and his team have initiated a fundraiser dubbed "Nerdvember" in Norwalk. Proceeds from this event will directly support two non-profit organizations dedicated to helping veterans and LGBTQ individuals. "Those are organizations we want to work with to help raise awareness and funding," French shared.

"Just to realize how important your mental health is," he remarked, encapsulating the message of their fundraising campaign. The group’s community-driven approach serves as a reminder of the biblical call to support those facing hardships, echoing 1 Thessalonians 5:11, which urges us to "encourage one another and build each other up."

For those interested in supporting this worthy cause, donations can be made through their GoFundMe page here. Moreover, if you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, don’t hesitate to reach out for help by calling 988, the national mental health hotline.

As we reflect on the actions of Tyler French and his friends, we are reminded that conversation and community support can be powerful tools in breaking down the barriers that silence those in pain. In the spirit of love and compassion championed by many religious teachings, we are encouraged to uplift one another, reinforcing the thought that every individual deserves a voice and the chance to heal. Let this be a call to action for us all: to reach out, to listen, and to create a space where every person feels valued and understood.
