Tele-MANAS Initiative: A Lifeline for Mental Health in Telangana
In an age where mental health concerns are on the rise, a new initiative in Telangana is proving to be a beacon of hope. Since its launch in October 2022, the Tele-Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS) helpline has received an astounding 1.38 lakh calls from individuals grappling with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
One compelling story highlights the urgency of this service. A 38-year-old unemployed man from Hyderabad found himself in a downward spiral of fear and self-harm after being diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a condition affecting facial muscles. Amid sleepless nights and intrusive thoughts, he reached out to the Tele-MANAS helpline by dialing 14416. His call was swiftly managed by a psychiatrist, who provided reassurance and guidance. Shortly after, he began to feel improvement, emphasizing the profound impact of timely mental health support.
The Tele-MANAS call center, located at the Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda, operates round the clock, staffed by a diverse team of professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and trained counselors. Each day, they handle between 150 to 200 calls, making services accessible to anyone with a phone, free of charge.
The effectiveness of this initiative shines through its outreach. With Kamareddy district leading the calls at 19,366, followed by Hyderabad and Hanamkonda, it’s evident that many are seeking help. This outreach underscores the critical importance of mental health resources, particularly for young adults and individuals facing sudden crises.
In a culture marked by stigmas around mental health, the anonymity and availability of the Tele-MANAS helpline can help bridge the gap between isolation and community support. As one official noted, “Most common callers are young adults, unemployed individuals, and people dealing with sudden medical or financial stressors.” This echoes the teachings of Jesus, who consistently championed compassion and support for the vulnerable, reminding us that "where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20, NIV).
Reflecting on the man’s journey towards healing reminds us that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Just as Jesus encouraged open dialogue and compassion, so too does Tele-MANAS foster an environment where individuals can express their struggles without fear of judgment.
As we ponder these stories, let us invite a spirit of openness and support within our communities. The Tele-MANAS initiative teaches us a valuable lesson: no one should journey through pain alone. In times of distress, remember that there are always hands ready to help, and voices willing to listen.
In moments of vulnerability, let us lean into faith and community—an empowering combination for healing.
