Fort Worth’s Techstars Accelerator Shines a Light on Innovation in Physical Health
On December 11, 2024, a remarkable gathering took place at Tannahill’s Tavern & Music Hall as the 2024 Techstars Physical Health Fort Worth Demo Day celebrated the achievements of 11 innovative startups in the physical health sector. Under the watchful eye of Trey Bowles, managing director of Techstars, entrepreneurs took the stage to pitch their groundbreaking ideas—a culmination of three years dedicated to fostering advancements in rehabilitation and human performance.
The event not only marked a pivotal moment for these emerging businesses but also showcased Fort Worth’s aspiration to establish itself as "the physical health capital of the world." As the only Texas city hosting a Techstars accelerator this year, Fort Worth has distinguished itself as a hub for innovation in physical health, with Techstars operating over 50 accelerator programs globally.
Bowles expressed his pride in the accelerator’s accomplishments, stating that it has successfully raised approximately $17.5 million in capital since its inception. "This has been a great chance for us to celebrate why Fort Worth is such a great place to build a business," he noted, emphasizing the city’s resources and supportive environment for entrepreneurs.
Launched in 2022, the Techstars Physical Health Fort Worth Accelerator resulted from a collaborative effort involving the Health Science Center, the city of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Goff Capital, and Techstars. It filled a significant gap in the community by providing mentorship and a structured program for early-stage companies in the physical health sector.
Cameron Cushman, assistant vice president of innovation ecosystems at the Health Science Center, highlighted the need for a dedicated accelerator that focuses on physical health, noting the industry’s vast potential for disruption. “If you want to innovate in physical therapy, where do you go?” he questioned, indicating a lack of prominent locations for such specialization in the U.S.
The program’s funding, sourced from federal COVID-19 relief and local investments, has enabled it to recruit 31 startups from around the globe, fostering a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in Fort Worth. Mayor Mattie Parker expressed pride in the achievements made possible through this partnership, recognizing it as a step towards positioning Fort Worth as a premier location for business startups—a sentiment echoed in her welcome video at the Demo Day.
As the Techstars program concludes its initial three-year phase, Bowles anticipates a bright future where the accelerator can continue creating opportunities for growth and innovation. "There’s so much potential and good from leaders in the community," he stated, hinting at continued collaborations that will shape the future landscape of physical health in the region.
