AI Tools Risk Creating Gender Bias in Care Decisions for Women, Study Finds

A recent study reveals worrying trends in how artificial intelligence (AI) assists social care providers in England, particularly concerning gender biases that may undermine the physical and mental health of women. The research from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) indicates that over half of England’s councils are relying on AI tools, such as Google’s “Gemma,” which may inadvertently favor male descriptions while downplaying the needs of female patients.

Disturbing Disparities in Care Descriptions

Analyzing real case notes from 617 adult social care users, the LSE study discovered significant linguistic discrepancies based on gender. When summarizing the same information, phrases common in male descriptions included terms such as “disabled” and “complex,” while women were often characterized in less serious terms, downplaying similar needs. For instance, a male patient was described as having "poor mobility" and lacking a care package, while his female counterpart was portrayed as "independent" and "able to manage her daily activities."

Dr. Sam Rickman, the lead author of the report, emphasized the potential for these biased models to lead to unequal care provision for women. “We know these models are being used very widely and what’s concerning is that we found very meaningful differences between measures of bias in different models,” he stated. The implications of such biases could affect the quality and allocation of care women receive, raising ethical concerns about the reliance on AI in this sensitive area.

As local authorities increasingly deploy AI to alleviate the burdens faced by social workers, the need for transparency and rigorous testing becomes paramount. Dr. Rickman suggests that regulations must be established to measure bias in AI tools used in long-term care to promote "algorithmic fairness." The study also highlighted that while some models, like Google’s Gemma, exhibited pronounced disparities, others like Meta’s Llama 3 did not show gender-based differences.
