Post-Election Anxiety? Virtual Mental Health Clinic Modyfi Health Offers Support
Anxiety is on the rise as Inauguration Day approaches, but there’s help available—Modyfi Health is stepping up to support those in need.
WASHINGTON — As the nation counts down to Inauguration Day just one week away, many people are grappling with heightened levels of anxiety and uncertainty about the future. Recognizing this widespread concern, Modyfi Health, a virtual mental health clinic, is hosting weekly group sessions dedicated to addressing post-election anxiety—a timely initiative that provides a safe space for individuals to process their feelings.
Modyfi Health adopts an integrated approach to mental health and wellness, encompassing both psychological support and nutritional guidance. In the wake of Election Day, their team of clinicians conducted an assessment among clients and uncovered a significant theme: pervasive anxiety regarding future events and their implications. "Many individuals expressed feelings of unease and apprehension about what lies ahead," noted Deb Dunman, a psychotherapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Modyfi. "In response, we brainstormed ways to create resources to help."
This thoughtful response culminated in the establishment of post-election anxiety group therapy sessions, now held every Thursday. Participants gather to share their experiences and coping strategies, fostering a sense of community amid uncertainty.
Dunman explains that common themes discussed in the sessions include anxiety about unexpected future events, fears regarding relationship dynamics, and concerns about how to responsibly consume news without becoming overwhelmed. “With Inauguration Day around the corner, these feelings are reaching a peak,” she remarked.
For those unable to attend, Dunman has shared practical tips to help manage anxiety. Key recommendations include seeking support from trusted individuals, distinguishing between fact-based news and opinion commentary, and maintaining basic self-care practices—the “PLEASE” acronym serves as a helpful guide:
- P: Physical health – Address any medical concerns first.
- L: Nutrition – Ensure adequate daily nourishment.
- E: Avoid mood-altering substances.
- S: Sleep – Prioritize rest and avoid late-night news.
- E: Exercise – Incorporate physical activity into your routine.
The Bible also speaks to the importance of community and support during turbulent times. In Galatians 6:2, it is written, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” This principle underlines the strength found in fellowship, encouraging individuals to lean on each other for emotional and spiritual support.
Modyfi Health will hold two additional group sessions, on January 16 and the Thursday following Inauguration Day. Participation is open to adults aged 18 and older residing in Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia, pending a screening call with the clinic.
As we navigate these challenging times, let us remember the wisdom found in the scriptures. Emotional challenges can arise, but engaging in supportive community and practicing self-care can help alleviate anxiety. Consider reflecting on how you can reach out to parents, friends, or community groups as a means of fostering connection, understanding that, together, we can cultivate a sense of peace—regardless of the uncertainty that lies ahead.
