Iron Mountain Author Weaves Dreams into Reality as Children’s Book Illustrator
MARQUETTE — In a testament to the magic of creativity and perseverance, Chelsey Lillge, a children’s book author and illustrator from Iron Mountain, has turned her passion for storytelling into a flourishing career. While she has authored one book, Dickinson Trades, most of her work is characterized by collaborations with fellow children’s authors, bringing their imaginative tales to life through vibrant illustrations.
Lillge, who has spent her life in Michigan’s picturesque Upper Peninsula, graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 2008 and attended Northern Michigan University. After several years in the sales industry, she made the leap into the world of children’s literature three years ago under the alias Lynne the Italic Illustrator, a name inspired by her and her daughter’s middle names. “To quote my 6-year-old, she says what I do is pure magic because I create something out of nothing,” Lillge remarked, reflecting the innocent curiosity and belief in the extraordinary that connects deeply with the hearts of children.
Her projects range widely, from Dickinson Trades, which aims to inspire young minds to explore blue-collar jobs, to emotionally resonant works like I Know a Girl, a collaboration with Stacey Hendricks that promotes self-esteem. Lillge has also teamed up with authors Stacey Latagne and Laura Grantham on the “Coping Crew” series and the “Estie Files,” respectively, both of which aim to empower children in facing common childhood fears.
With her husband and father as inspirations for Dickinson Trades, Lillge emphasizes the importance of valuing blue-collar work, illustrating a principle often echoed in biblical teachings: the significance of humble and skilled professions. As stated in Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV), "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward." "I started writing articles for newspapers at 16," she shared, pointing out how her career evolution serves as a reminder of how diverse experiences can coalesce into something larger. When speaking to children at schools, she often emphasizes that “your career builds on itself,” reminding them of the continuous journey of learning and growth.
Ensuring visibility for her work, Lillge has embraced social media marketing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, which she credits for connecting her with her publisher. “With having a decade-long career in marketing and advertising, I’ve always understood the importance of getting your name out there,” she noted, highlighting the modern-day realities of self-promotion in creative fields.
