Rural Radio Stations Face Uncertain Future Amid Funding Cuts
WHITESBURG, Ky. (LEX 18) — As Congress moves forward with a rescission package that threatens to cut over $1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, rural radio stations across America are bracing for a significant impact. This concern is especially pronounced for WMMT 88.7 FM, which has proudly broadcast from Whitesburg, Kentucky, for four decades. This milestone year now brings a daunting challenge as funding that supports essential services hangs in the balance.
"Funding from the CPB has been crucial for over 30 years, allowing us to uplift underserved voices in our community," noted Tiffany Sturdivant, executive director of Appalshop, the parent organization of WMMT. With one-third of the station’s budget derived from CPB funding, these cuts threaten not only artistic programming but also critical public safety information—information that became vital during the devastating flooding of 2022.
In tumultuous times, communities often look to trusted voices for guidance. "The radio was how many people received life-saving information," Sturdivant remarked, demonstrating the station’s essential role in Eastern Kentucky. As the industry faces possible budget constraints, Sturdivant estimates WMMT has about a year to adapt.
When asked about the road ahead, her determination shone through: "Where do we go? We continue to show up… Closing our doors is not an option. We will do what we need to do to keep our community informed." General Manager Paul Hitchcock underscored the importance of local stations, stating, "While NPR and PBS are often in the spotlight, it’s local stations that provide crucial news, music, and emergency information."
