Community Honors Beloved Cat with Memorial Sculpture
Barreirinha, December 14, 2024 — In a heartwarming tribute to the late Jackson the cat, a community resident spearheaded an initiative to immortalize the beloved feline in the form of a striking basalt sculpture. Jackson, who passed away four years ago on Friday the 13th, had captured the hearts of many locals, earning affectionate titles such as "the king of the area." On December 13, a plaque was unveiled alongside the sculpture, celebrating the joy Jackson brought to countless visitors.
The artwork, created by renowned sculptor Pepe Baptista, was revealed during a simple ceremony attended by supporters and admirers of Jackson. The inscription on the plaque beautifully expresses the community’s sentiment: “JACKSON, the king of the area, was adored by everyone who passed by Largo do Socorro. He belonged to everyone and belonged to no one! He will be missed.”
A Shared Connection
Sónia Fernandes, the resident who led the initiative, recalled her daily encounters with Jackson, who became a familiar presence in her life. “Every encounter with him felt like a small celebration,” she shared. “He made himself present and made himself loved.” Her efforts to honor Jackson stemmed from a deep-seated love for the cat, whose sudden death left an indelible mark on the community.
Reflecting on Jackson’s demise—following a tragic fall from the Socorro viewpoint—Sónia channeled her grief into creating something meaningful, turning her sorrow into a beautiful tribute. “It was a dream of mine to have this sculpture here so that every time I pass by, I will remember him,” she expressed. The construction company Sales Faria & Andrade generously sponsored the project, further highlighting community support in remembering their four-legged friend.

The impressive sculpture, measuring approximately 50 to 60 cm long and depicting one of Jackson’s favorite poses, now sits on a wall in Barreirinha, serving as a reminder of the connections we forge, both human and animal.
