New York City Artist Finds Success Through Faith and Perseverance
New York City — In a poignant tale of dreams deferred and unyielding hope, Armia Khalil has carved a remarkable journey from the struggles of immigrant life to becoming a featured artist at the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art. Khalil immigrated to the United States from Egypt in 2006 with only $400 and a suitcase filled with sculpting tools, driven by the aspiration to pursue a career in fine art. However, the harsh realities of life saw him sharing a cramped bedroom with construction workers in New Jersey and battling financial instability. “I was so naïve. I didn’t have any plan, just that one-way ticket and my dreams,” he recounted to CBS News.
His aspirations of becoming a professional sculptor seemed further away than ever, leading him to seek other avenues to stay connected to art. In 2012, he became a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, relishing the opportunity to be surrounded by masterpieces daily, even as he quietly grappled with his own artistic ambitions. “I cried within myself inside the gallery many times, wondering why it didn’t work out for me,” Khalil recalled.
A significant turn of fate awaited Khalil a couple of years ago. While engaging in conversation with a visitor—unbeknownst to him, Akili Tommasino, a curator at the Met—Khalil shared his background as an artist. In a serendipitous moment described by Tommasino as “divinely ordained,” the two connected over Khalil’s talent, leading to the inclusion of his sculpture in the Met’s latest exhibit, "Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876–."
Khalil’s stunning piece, crafted from a single piece of ash wood over five months, now sits among works celebrating the rich artistic heritage of ancient Egypt. The experience was surreal for Khalil, who expressed disbelief and gratitude upon seeing his work prominently displayed. “It was a real surreal moment for me,” he said, echoing sentiments that resonate with the biblical principle of faith—a reminder that unseen possibilities can emerge through steadfast belief and effort.
