Celebrating Community and Literacy: Black Pearl Books’ Mission Shines During Black History Month
In the heart of Austin, Texas, a transformative initiative is unfolding at Black Pearl Books, an independent bookstore co-owned by Katrina and Eric Brooks. With a mission to foster diversity, inclusion, and representation through literature, this black-woman-owned establishment is not just a bookstore; it’s a community hub dedicated to enriching the lives of those who enter.
Amidst the vibrancy of Black History Month, the Brooks joined the We Are Austin team in the studio to discuss their bookstore’s significant impact. The couple’s passion for literature and education resonates deeply, echoing the biblical principle found in Proverbs 4:7: "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding."
The couple understands that wisdom often comes through learning and sharing stories. Their non-profit initiative, "Put it in a Book," exemplifies this belief by donating books to hundreds of classrooms across Central Texas. This outreach brings not only knowledge but also hope and inspiration to students in often under-resourced areas, reflecting the selfless love and encouragement that Jesus taught us to embody.
Book lovers and families are invited to partake in upcoming events that promote creativity and connection. On March 1, children and caregivers can gather for the "Marshmallow Dinos" event, where young minds will explore the science of balance, gravity, and engineering—all while having fun crafting dinosaur figures from marshmallows. This free event serves as a delightful opportunity for learning through play, reminiscent of the joyful gatherings Jesus would host, welcoming children into his presence.
The community can also look forward to the bookstore’s open mic night, held on the fourth Saturday of every month. This event, priced at just $5, encourages participants to express their poetry, music, and creativity—providing a platform for voices to be heard and stories to be shared. It embodies the spirit of togetherness Jesus advocated, where each individual’s expression contributes to the rich tapestry of the community.
Black Pearl Books is located at 7112 Burnet Rd in Austin, a space where literature meets love and community engagement. For more information about their offerings, you can visit Black Pearl Books’ website.
As we reflect on the collaborative spirit displayed by the Brooks and their commitment to education and community, we are reminded of the encouragement found in Galatians 6:9: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Let today serve as an invitation to engage with your community through acts of kindness and creativity, nurturing not just your own understanding but supporting the growth of others along the way. In doing so, we can foster a richer, more connected world that uplifts every individual.
