Twenty Lost Paintings by Winston Branch Recovered After Nearly Five Decades
In a remarkable twist worthy of an art heist film, twenty paintings by Caribbean British abstract painter Winston Branch have been recovered after disappearing without a trace for nearly fifty years. Branch, now 78, faced an unsettling chapter in his life during the 1970s when he was unable to pay rent for his Berlin studio. “Those works were stolen from his studio,” explained his agent, Varvara Roza, highlighting the desperation that led to the disappearance of the artist’s early figurative creations. It was revealed that the paintings had been sold to an architect, who had taken them to Greece, unaware of their complicated past.
