Bookshop.org Launches E-Book Platform, Empowering Independent Bookshops in the UK

In a significant move for independent booksellers, Bookshop.org is set to launch a new platform that will allow UK bookstores to sell e-books, presenting an alternative to Amazon’s Kindle offering. Starting soon, independent bookshops will retain 100% of the profits from e-book sales, with all titles priced competitively against Amazon. “Bookshops now have an additional tool in their fight against Amazon,” said Nicole Vanderbilt, managing director of Bookshop.org UK. This platform aims to dismantle the perceived monopoly of larger corporations by encouraging readers to purchase e-books from their local bookshops instead.

Since its UK launch in November 2020, Bookshop.org has already generated £4.5 million for independent booksellers, highlighting the potential impact of supporting local businesses. This new e-book option allows customers to choose a bookstore, ensuring their purchases directly benefit a shop of their choice. In cases where no specific bookstore is selected, sales will contribute to a shared fund, distributed among all participating stores.

Nic Bottomley, co-owner of Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights, acknowledged, “Our true love might be print, but ebooks are an important part of the lives of so many readers.” This sentiment resonates with the broader biblical principle of stewardship, reflecting the idea of caring for the community and using available tools to enhance access to information and culture.

Interestingly, research shows that nearly a quarter of Britons now prefer reading e-books, which aligns with Erin Kelly’s assertion that e-books serve as an “ultimate inclusive format,” granting access to literature for those who might face challenges with traditional books.
