Dr. Zaato: The 24-Hour Economy Remains an Elusive Goal
In a bold statement that has garnered attention, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, claims that the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) promise of a 24-hour economy is little more than a "mirage." Despite months since the NDC’s assumption of office and the enthusiastic promotion of this policy as a cornerstone of development, Dr. Zaato contends that there is scant evidence of its implementation.
Appearing on TV3’s Key Point on December 20, 2025, Dr. Zaato emphasized, “The 24-hour economy is still a mirage. It’s not there.” His skepticism stems from a lack of tangible results or clear answers regarding the policy’s effectiveness. During the 2024 election campaign, the initiative was touted as a pivotal strategy for job creation and economic stimulation, yet Dr. Zaato argues that it has not materialized in any meaningful way.
He reflected on previous policies, notably comparing the NDC’s ambitious efforts to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Free Senior High School (SHS) initiative. He remarked, "By December 2017, free SHS was in full swing," questioning, "Where is the 24-hour economy?"
Dr. Zaato’s critique extends beyond mere observation; he challenges the fundamental premise of the 24-hour economy, reminding audiences that economic activity is driven by demand. He pointed out that small vendors will not operate on a 24-hour schedule without a compelling market need.
Moreover, he expressed disappointment over the absence of the Women’s Development Bank, another key pillar of the 24-hour economy. Dr. Zaato highlighted the significant barriers women face in accessing capital and voiced concerns over the lack of action to rectify this, stating, "Where is the bank? If you see the bank, show me."
Dr. Zaato concluded that both the 24-hour economy and the promised Women’s Development Bank have yet to materialize, labeling them as a "scam" and a "mirage."
