FinTech Wales Hosts Vital Support Event for Tata Steel Job Losses
In a notable response to recent job losses at Tata Steel, FinTech Wales, in collaboration with recruitment agency Acorn by Synergie, organized an engagement event on November 26 at the Community Support Centre in Aberafan Shopping Centre, Port Talbot. This initiative aimed to assist individuals and families affected by the economic downturn, providing insights into job opportunities within the fintech and financial services sectors.
The gathering featured employers from diverse organizations, including WeGetDesign, Cadre Advisory, and Swansea University, who shared valuable information about potential career paths. Neath Port Talbot County Borough’s Mayor, Councillor Matthew Crowley, also attended, indicating the significance of community leadership in times of crisis.
This event is part of a broader £13.5 million UK Government-funded program facilitated by the Tata Steel Transition Board, which seeks to support both displaced workers and local businesses in diversifying and growing their operations. Eligible Tata employees and their families can apply for up to £10,000 to start new ventures, alongside grants up to £250,000 for existing businesses—highlighting the community’s commitment to resilience and recovery.
Sarah Williams-Gardener, Chair of FinTech Wales, emphasized the importance of sustainable opportunities amidst adversity. “Supporting individuals impacted by the recent Tata Steel redundancies is not just about providing jobs; it’s about creating sustainable opportunities and a brighter future for the community,” she stated. Her remarks resonate with the biblical principle found in Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV), which assures us: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Acorn by Synergie’s Commercial Partnerships Director, Mark Rudge, expressed excitement about introducing local talent to the fintech industry, citing it as a pathway to new beginnings. “We hope this event will now open the door to a bright and exciting future for many local residents,” he noted, highlighting the positive impact of collaboration in fostering hope.
The recently opened Community Support Centre serves as a hub for assistance and training, as showcased during the event. This initiative aligns with the broader mission of FinTech Wales, launched in April 2019, to empower its members and advocate for their needs within the financial services landscape.
