Federal Government Launches TVET Program to Empower Youths and Drive Economic Growth

In a bold move aimed at reshaping the Nigerian workforce, the Federal Government has rolled out a transformative initiative targeting nearly one million young Nigerians. The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Education, seeks to turn aspiring young individuals into entrepreneurs rather than mere job seekers.
During an inspection visit to AFS Vocational Hub and Golden Finger Farms and Ranches Limited in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa announced that over 250,000 youths have already enrolled in this comprehensive program. This initiative aligns closely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to furnish the nation’s youth with essential skills for inclusive economic growth.
A Shift Towards Sustainable Skills Development
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the TVET framework streamlines training from 86 trades to 28 key industry sectors crucial for Nigeria’s economy, which includes fashion design, plumbing, and modern farming. With a curriculum that boasts 90% practical training, participants can expect hands-on experience that enhances their market readiness.
“The objective is clear: to create entrepreneurs out of these students,” Dr. Alausa stated. With 1.3 million applications received, only 960,000 were verified through the NIN and BVN systems, ensuring a transparent selection process. Participants receive a monthly stipend of ₦22,500 to support their needs, while training centers are funded directly to uphold accountability.
A Testament to Hope and Potential
Participants reflect the diverse educational backgrounds of Nigeria, including graduates from universities and polytechnics. Dr. Alausa noted, “This government has meticulously worked to make this initiative sustainable,” revealing that annual incremental funding has already been endorsed to support its longevity.
He highlighted that the Bank of Industry will collaborate with the Ministry to offer affordable loans, allowing graduates to effectively apply their skills, create jobs, and contribute to national growth. “Technical and vocational education now stands at the center of our national development agenda," he noted.
At the Fashion and Garment Making Centre, trainee Margaret Ogunsanya shared her journey from uncertainty to empowerment, stating, "Before this training, I didn’t know how to use an industrial sewing machine. Now, I can cut, measure, and sew professionally."

Another trainee at Golden Finger Farms and Ranches Limited, Henry Okonta, expressed similar enthusiasm. “I’m learning poultry and fish farming hands-on. The government’s promise of grants and equipment gives me confidence to start my own farm.” His journey illustrates the biblical principle of sowing seeds that yield abundance, as emphasized in 2 Corinthians 9:6 (NIV): “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”
