Chile’s Finance Minister Promises Responsible 2026 Budget Amidst Codelco’s Recovery Efforts

By Fabian Cambero

SANTIAGO (Reuters) – In a move reflecting prudence and responsibility, Chile’s newly appointed Finance Minister Nicolas Grau announced plans for a limited increase in the 2026 budget, as the country grapples with production challenges at state-run Codelco, the world’s largest copper miner.

In an exclusive interview, Grau emphasized the need for a budget that not only meets the country’s current needs but also offers flexibility for the next administration. As Chile faces a presidential election in November, the outgoing President Gabriel Boric will unveil the final budget before stepping down in March. Notably, the budget increases have been on a declining trend since 2023, which saw a 4.2% rise, with expectations of averaging around a 2% increase in the upcoming budget.

"What we’re going to do is define a responsible budget with Congress that addresses the country’s needs," Grau stated, echoing the biblical principle found in Proverbs 21:5, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” This investment in careful planning reflects a commitment not only to fiscal responsibility but also to the welfare of the nation.

Codelco’s Road to Recovery

Codelco’s struggles have been compounded by recent setbacks, including a fatal accident at its flagship El Teniente mine that prompted the state-owned company to cut its annual production targets. With Chile producing a significant third of the world’s copper, the recovery of Codelco is crucial for the national economy.

Grau expressed confidence in the initiatives taken by Codelco, including partnerships with companies like Anglo American to tap into new deposits. "Codelco is creating these public-private partnerships that allow it to maintain its leadership in the copper sector," he remarked, suggesting a spirit of collaboration that mirrors the biblical call to community and shared stewardship.

Economic Growth and Employment

Looking ahead, Grau projected a 2.5% growth for the economy this year, bolstered by a more than 5% increase in investments focused on carbon-neutral projects such as clean energy and digital infrastructure. He also acknowledged the rising unemployment rate, which remains a pressing concern at 8.7%. Drawing from a Christian perspective that values compassion and care for the marginalized, the minister is tasked with addressing these challenges while leaving a legacy of progress.

"Although the unemployment rate has dropped somewhat in the latest data, it remains a challenging figure," Grau noted. He reassured citizens that policies like pension reform and improved permitting for large mining and renewable energy projects are underway to foster growth. This approach resonates with the biblical principle of serving and uplifting one’s neighbor, as taught in Galatians 5:13, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

Encouraging Takeaway

As Chileans navigate the challenges of economic fluctuations and industry recoveries, the integrity espoused in leadership and community collaboration holds promise for a bright future. The ideals of diligence, responsibility, and service can inspire everyone to strive for a better tomorrow, both economically and spiritually. Let us reflect on these principles and consider how we can contribute positively to the collective well-being of our communities.

In this time of uncertainty and renewal, may we embrace the words of Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you,” encouraging us to actively seek not only a prosperous economy but a thriving society grounded in mutual respect and shared endeavors.
