Chattanooga Cleaning Contractor Fined $400,000 for Child Labor Violations

In a poignant reminder of the importance of safeguarding our youth, QSI LLC, a Chattanooga-based cleaning contractor, has been fined $400,000 by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) for the illegal employment of minors and violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. This case highlights a growing concern regarding child labor practices across various industries in the United States.

The DOL’s Wage and Hour Division uncovered that QSI LLC was utilizing children for overnight sanitation shifts at 13 meat and poultry processing facilities from January 2021 through February 2024. Allegations span numerous states, including Tennessee, Alabama, California, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, and Virginia. Such actions not only violate federal regulations but also disregard the well-being and development of young workers.

In response to the violations, the agreement reached with the Department of Labor mandates QSI LLC to pay the hefty fine, implement stringent auditing policies, and maintain a toll-free number for reporting potential child labor concerns. “The Department of Labor is determined to stop our nation’s children from being endangered in jobs for which they should never be hired,” stated Solicitor of Labor Seema Nanda. This vigilance aligns with a broader commitment to ensure that all workplaces are safe and nurturing environments for everyone, particularly minors.

Alongside the financial penalty, the agreement dictates a series of proactive measures that QSI LLC must adopt. These include conducting re-surveys of their work locations to identify underage employees and revamping their child labor compliance training materials. They are also required to keep accurate employee records and incorporate anti-child labor clauses in their contracts.
