Afghanistan Seeks Closer Economic Ties with India Amid Challenges
NEW DELHI — In a bold move aimed at revitalizing its economy, Afghanistan announced a plan to incentivize Indian investment through significant tax breaks and lowered import duties. Afghan Commerce Minister Nooruddin Azizi revealed a five-year tax exemption for new industries, coupled with a mere 1% import duty on essential raw materials and machinery. This declaration came during an event hosted by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Delhi, emphasizing Afghanistan’s goal to foster deeper economic ties with India.
Azizi identified key sectors such as cement, rice, textiles, pharmaceuticals, mining, and energy as priorities for development in a nation still grappling with the aftermath of prolonged conflict. He emphasized the creation of a "flexible and enabling" business environment to attract Indian entrepreneurs to invest in Afghanistan. "To support domestic industry, we are giving a preferential 1% tariff on raw materials and machinery," he said, highlighting a commitment to enhancing production incentives.
In light of logistical challenges, including border closures with Pakistan and frozen foreign reserves, Azizi underscored the urgent need for partnership. He called on India to assist in keeping trade routes, like those from Chabahar Port, operational. "Americans block our funds… Pakistan blocks one side. What are we supposed to do?" he lamented, thus inviting collaboration to overcome these hurdles.
