A Plow in One Hand, Faith in the Other: Embracing Commitment to Christ

Growing up in a small town, my grandfather’s farm was a place of learning and laughter. I remember the first time he showed me how to plow a straight line. “Keep your eyes straight ahead, on the point you’re headed towards,” he said. The moment I looked back, our line went crooked. And that simple life lesson is captured beautifully in Luke 9:62 where Jesus proclaims, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

This powerful verse calls us to steadfastness and unwavering commitment, a message as relevant today as it was in Christ’s time. Join me as we explore what it means to adopt this divine focus in our spiritual journey.

The Challenge of Looking Back

We all have moments when the past tugs at us. Be it nostalgia, regret, or unfinished business, looking back can overshadow the bright future God intends for us.

  • Nostalgia: While pleasant memories warm our hearts, dwelling too much in the past can distract us from the present.

  • Regret: Lingering on past mistakes may hinder our ability to embrace God’s forgiveness and redemption.

  • Unfinished Business: Holding onto past grievances hinders our growth and spiritual progress.

In Luke 9:62, Jesus illustrates that discipleship requires a forward-focused dedication, emphasizing the importance of a singular direction in faith and purpose.

The Cost of Discipleship

Jesus’s teachings often contain layers of understanding. Here, the image of plowing is not only about focusing forward but also underscores the cost of discipleship. Following Christ demands our full attention and exclusion of divided loyalties.

  • Single-mindedness: As followers of Jesus, our focus must not waver. Look at Paul’s experience in Philippians 3:13-14, where he presses on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call in Christ.

  • Sacrifice: Embrace the sacrifices needed to walk with Christ. Full commitment means laying down personal desires for his greater purpose.

  • Perseverance: Just as a farmer trusts the process of sowing and reaping, believers persevere with faith in God’s promises.

Embracing a Steadfast Faith

So, how do we keep our faith plow in a straight line? How do we maintain commitment without looking back?

  1. Prayerful Focus: Begin each day surrendering your plans in prayer, asking God for the strength and focus to be firm in your faith journey.

  2. Community Support: Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage and uplift each other in this path.

  3. Continuing Education: Dive deep into the Bible, drawing lessons and strength from the accounts of unwavering faith.

  4. Reflective Journaling: Write about your spiritual journey—your hopes, doubts, and revelations—keeping an ongoing dialogue with yourself and God.
