You know that heavy, sinking feeling. You’re sitting in your car after a tough meeting, staring at a blank screen late at night, or just lying in bed looking at the ceiling, thinking: Maybe I’m just not cut out for this. Whether it’s a career shift that isn’t taking off, a relationship that feels impossibly hard, or a personal goal that keeps slipping through your fingers, the exhaustion is real. You’ve put in the work. You’ve tried to stay positive. But right now, the tank is empty, and the urge to just quietly quit and retreat to safety is overwhelmingly strong.

It is completely normal to feel this way. We usually misdiagnose this feeling, though. We think our sudden wave of self-doubt is a glaring warning sign that we are on the wrong path, or worse, that we simply aren’t good enough. But if you dig a little deeper, the root of the problem isn’t a lack of talent or capability. The real issue is that we have tied our confidence directly to immediate results. When the payoff gets delayed, or when we hit a messy, complicated roadblock, we panic. We take our self-belief—the very tool we need to actually get through the struggle—and we toss it out the window. We don’t lose our confidence; we actively throw it away because the discomfort of hoping and trying feels too vulnerable.

But what if you stopped looking at confidence as a fleeting emotion that depends on your circumstances, and started treating it like your most valuable asset? A mentor of mine once put it this way: "Whatever you do, don’t throw away your confidence; it pays massive dividends if you just hold onto it through the messy middle." She told me she first encountered the idea in Hebrews 10:35 — but the concept doesn’t require a religious framework to be true. It’s just quietly profound wisdom that happens to have ancient roots. Your confidence is the bridge between where you are now and the breakthrough that is coming. Throwing it away doesn’t protect you from failure; it guarantees it. You have to decide that your belief in yourself is non-negotiable, even when the evidence of your success hasn’t materialized yet.

Decouple your identity from this specific outcome. When you hit a wall, it’s dangerously easy to blur the lines between failing at a specific attempt and being a failure as a person. You are entirely separate from the project, the promotion, or the relationship rough patch you are currently navigating. Your worth is a fixed baseline. Once you stop making this current struggle a referendum on your value as a human being, it becomes so much easier to hold onto your self-belief. You can look at a problem objectively and say, "This is really hard right now," without having to say, "I am totally inadequate."

Trace your own track record of resilience. Whenever you are tempted to surrender your confidence, take a moment to look backward before you try to move forward. Your brain is naturally hardwired to focus on the immediate threat, completely ignoring the fact that you have survived one hundred percent of your bad days up to this point. Think about the last time you felt totally out of your depth. You probably felt this exact same cocktail of fear and inadequacy, yet you figured it out and made it to the other side. You have to intentionally borrow confidence from your past victories to fund your current struggle.

Aggressively curate your mental inputs. We often throw away our confidence because we are constantly feeding on a diet of comparison. If you are scrolling through curated highlight reels of other people achieving the exact things you are struggling with, you are practically handing your self-belief over to a stranger. Protect your mental real estate. Mute the social media accounts that make you feel like you are falling behind. Surround yourself with voices—whether they are friends, podcasts, or books—that remind you of your potential and normalize the reality of the struggle.

Take one microscopic step forward. Confidence isn’t built in massive leaps; it is forged in tiny, almost unnoticeable daily actions. When the finish line feels miles away, stop looking at it. Look at the next three feet. What is one small, manageable thing you can do today that moves the needle? Sending one email, having one difficult but honest conversation, or dedicating twenty minutes to your craft builds a small reserve of momentum. Action is always the greatest antidote to self-doubt.

The next time you feel the urge to pack it in and shrink back, pause for a second and check your grip. Are you about to throw away the very thing you need to succeed? The messy middle is where most people quit, but it is also the exact place where the most beautiful transformations happen. Hold onto your confidence—the reward for your resilience is waiting just on the other side of this current challenge.

What is one small thing you do to reset and find your footing when you’re feeling completely overwhelmed?

Q&A about Hebrews 10:35

Why is it so hard to keep my confidence in God when everything is going wrong?
It is totally normal to feel discouraged when facing trials, but God actually uses those exact moments to test and strengthen our faith. The apostle Peter encourages us in 1 Peter 1:6-7 to rejoice even when we suffer grief in all kinds of trials, because they prove the genuine, lasting nature of our faith. Practically, when you feel like quitting, lean into prayer and Christian community rather than pulling away, trusting that God is using this friction to build your spiritual endurance.

I keep reading about not throwing away my confidence in Hebrews 10:35, but what does that actually look like in real life?
Throwing away your confidence means surrendering your trust in God’s promises just because your current circumstances are exhausting or confusing. Jesus warns against this in Mark 4:17 when he describes the seed sown on rocky places, representing people who receive the word with joy but quickly fall away when trouble or persecution comes. To avoid doing this today, you must actively remind yourself of God’s past faithfulness in your life rather than letting your present anxieties dictate your spiritual choices.

What exactly is the rich reward God promises us if we don’t give up on our faith?
The rich reward is both the eternal inheritance of living with God forever and the present peace of experiencing His presence in our daily lives. In James 1:12, the scripture promises that blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. You can practically live in light of this today by shifting your daily focus away from temporary struggles and anchoring your hope in the unshakeable reality of your salvation.

How do I rebuild my spiritual confidence if I feel like I’ve already thrown it away?
God is infinitely patient and always ready to restore your faith, so your first step is simply to return to Him in honest prayer and ask for a renewed spirit. We see this beautiful grace in 1 John 1:9, which assures us that if we confess our sins and shortcomings, God is faithful and just to forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness. You can start rebuilding today by taking small, daily steps of obedience, like spending a few minutes reading the Gospels or talking to a trusted Christian mentor, allowing God to slowly reconstruct your trust.
