Devotional: Eternal Treasures: Investing in Heaven’s Wealth

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Reflection:

In a world obsessed with material wealth, it’s easy to get swept away in the currents of consumerism. Advertisements beckon us to seek happiness through possessions, convincing us that fulfillment lies in the latest gadget, the trendiest clothes, or the biggest house. Yet, Jesus invites us to flip this perspective upside down.

He speaks of two kinds of treasure: those that fade away and those that hold eternal value. The treasures of earth are temporary; they offer fleeting satisfaction and can be taken from us at any moment. On the contrary, heavenly treasures—acts of love, kindness, generosity, and faithfulness—are imperishable. They become a part of the eternal tapestry God is weaving.

Investing in Heaven’s Wealth:

  1. Cultivating Relationships: Seek opportunities to build and nurture relationships. Love your family, encourage friends, and lend a hand to those in need. Each kind word, each act of kindness, adds to our eternal richness.

  2. Serving Others: Invest time in serving your community. Volunteer, mentor, or simply be present for someone in distress. Service is a powerful way to reflect Christ’s love and build treasures that cannot be lost.

  3. Growing Spiritually: Prioritize your relationship with God. Engage in prayer, study the Word, and be part of a community of believers. As your faith deepens, you naturally invest in something that lasts.

  4. Generosity: Be generous with your resources. Tithing and giving to those in need not only blesses others but contributes to your heavenly account. Share what you have—your time, talents, and finances.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help me to see beyond the temporary treasures of this world. Teach me to invest my heart and resources where they truly matter— in love, service, and faithfulness. May my life reflect Your generosity as I seek to build a storehouse of eternal riches. May I find my joy not in what I own, but in what I give away. Amen.

Activity:

Take a moment to journal about where you feel God is calling you to invest in eternal treasures. Consider serving, giving, or nurturing a relationship. Make a plan to act on it this week, and remember, each small step contributes to a wealth that lasts forever.

Q&A about storing up treasures in heaven

How can I start investing in eternal treasures today?
Start by serving others and showing kindness, as Jesus taught in Matthew 25:40, where He emphasizes that when we do good for those in need, we are doing it for Him. This means that acts of love and service directly contribute to your heavenly investment.

Is it selfish to think about storing treasures in heaven?
Not at all! Jesus encourages us to store up treasures in heaven instead of on earth, as mentioned in Matthew 6:19-21, highlighting that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also. This perspective shifts our focus from self-interest to God’s kingdom and the well-being of others.

What does the Bible say about the kind of treasures I should be pursuing?
In 1 Timothy 6:18-19, Paul advises us to do good, be rich in good deeds, and be generous, which shows that spiritual and moral wealth is of far greater value than material possessions. Focusing on love, compassion, and generosity aligns our hearts with God’s priorities.

How do my daily choices reflect my investment in heavenly wealth?
Your daily choices are an expression of your faith and priorities, as seen in Colossians 3:2, which encourages setting our minds on things above, not on earthly things. Each decision to pursue God’s will, support others, and cultivate a spirit of gratitude builds your eternal investment in a meaningful way.
