Japan’s Morning Ritual: Radio Taiso and the Heart of Community Wellness

TOKYO (AP) — Every morning at 6:30, the air in Japan fills with the soothing sounds of music, marking the beginning of a cherished tradition known as Radio Taiso, or Exercise Radio. This nearly century-old program, introduced in 1928 alongside Emperor Hirohito’s enthronement, invites millions daily to engage in simple but invigorating calisthenics, either at home, in workplaces, or in vibrant parks across the nation.

The 10-minute routine features basic movements like reaching to the sky, twisting at the torso, and jumping in place, set to a relaxed piano melody. Radio Taiso has its roots in an exercise program from the United States, brought to Japan in the 1920s. After being suspended during the post-war occupation, it resumed in 1951, becoming a cherished tradition once more. A 2023 survey notes that over 20 million people practice Radio Taiso weekly.

The program does more than enhance physical health; it serves as a social anchor, especially for the elderly.
