Underwater “Storms” Threaten Antarctic Glaciers and Global Sea Levels, New Study Reveals

Recent research has unveiled alarming findings about the effects of underwater turbulence on two crucial Antarctic glaciers, raising concerns over their rapid melting and the repercussions for global sea levels.

Antarctic Giants at Risk

Researchers have discovered that swirling underwater storms are intensifying the melting of the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers. The latter, often dubbed the "Doomsday Glacier," is particularly ominous due to its potential to significantly contribute to sea level rise—up to 10 feet—if it collapses.

As the study published in Nature Geosciences points out, these underwater storms, referred to as submesoscales, act similarly to atmospheric storms. They create swirling, chaotic conditions that can rapidly transport warmer water to vulnerable ice areas beneath the glaciers, further accelerating their melt.

Understanding the Mechanism

Yoshihiro Nakayama, a researcher involved in the study, emphasizes the unique approach of analyzing ocean dynamics over much shorter time frames than traditionally used. This new lens sheds light on how these tumultuous weather-like seas can contribute to a concerning feedback loop: as ice melts, it introduces cold freshwater into warmer ocean currents, generating more turbulence and thus more ice melt.

In the words of study co-author Lia Siegelman, "This positive feedback loop could gain intensity in a warming climate," highlighting the growing urgency to address climate change as an increasingly relevant issue.
