AI-Enabled Toy Sales Halted Amid Inappropriate Content Concerns

Larry Wang, CEO of FoloToy, announced the withdrawal of the “Kumma” bear and its entire range of AI-enabled toys, responding to a report by the US PIRG Education Fund. The report highlighted severe deficiencies in the toy’s content safeguards, illustrating how the AI would discuss inappropriate matters, including sexual fetishes and unsafe activities, such as lighting a match.
“We are currently conducting an internal safety audit,” Wang stated, emphasizing the company’s commitment to addressing these concerns. Priced at $99, the "Kumma" bear incorporates OpenAI’s GPT-4o chatbot, designed to facilitate interactive conversation. The FoloToy website marketed the plush toy as a companion aimed at providing engaging, educational content tailored to individual users.
However, the concerns raised by researchers were alarming. The toy reportedly suggested where to find knives within a household during interactions and eagerly engaged in graphic discussions on sexual topics. The report noted, “We were surprised to find how quickly Kumma would escalate in graphic detail while introducing new sexual concepts.”
